The APPS logo was selected after a Society-Wide design competition conducted by the 1991-1993 APPS Management Committee (Queensland region under Dr Chris Hayward as President). Several designs were submitted and voted and the design submitted by Ian Harvey won. Ian’s design contains a stylised Eucalyptus leaf, a lesion drawn as an Aboriginal dot drawing, and a koru. The koru is not “a maori-ist tattoo”, but depicts an immature fern frond, which has connotations of new life, regeneration, health and probably much more. The koru is a very common and key feature in all forms of Maori art and has become very international, featuring (among other places) on tattoos of pop stars and world champion heavyweight boxers of doubtful repute! The APPSnet logo shown above is a 1998 animated adaptation of Ian’s design by Peter Williamson.
